Exotarium | Brno Zoo

Location

Czech republic, Brno

Involvement period

2024

The design of the new Exotarium at Brno Zoo is based on the idea of connecting architecture, nature, and environmental education. The existing complex is replaced by a group of four interconnected buildings: an exotic bird pavilion, an aquarium pavilion, a visitor café, and operational facilities for the staff.

The bird pavilion is conceived as an open, walk-through space in which visitors come into direct contact with the birds in an environment resembling their natural conditions. The aquarium pavilion, by contrast, is partially embedded in the terrain and, in addition to the exhibition itself, provides space for lectures, screenings, and other educational activities.

A distinctive element of the design is the café building, featuring a vegetated façade integrated with a water-management system. Vegetation becomes part of the architecture, supports the local microclimate, and creates a habitat for other organisms. The landscape design of the entire complex follows the character of the zoo and primarily uses native plant species.
